Perry Lake aka Perry Reservoir...Go there soon!

Perry Lake...a great fishing, camping, equestrian atv-ing, boating and hiking destination! I am going there today......heading over with my trailer, trying to beat the 4th of July crowd and hoping to get a campsite right on the Lake. (Although, I hear it is full )

Perry State Park...only 20 minutes from Topeka or Lawrence.....easy to get to from Kansas City.......I 70 to the East Lawrence exit..take a right and keep driving. It only takes about an hour!

12,500 acres of Lake!!!( now that is a big lake!) 11,000 acres of wildlife area nearby. Perry State Park is 1,250 acres on the shore in Perry Lake in Jefferson County, Kansas. There are several campgrounds scattered around the lake....most of them have lake front campsites and basic services like showers, toilets, electric and water...there are also numerous primitive tent campsites. A swimming beach and a beach house adds to the summer fun factor! Numerous ramps to launch boats, but check water depth! Lake Perry is used by the Corp of Engineers for flood control, so in high rain situations the boat ramps and courtesy docks in the Park may be unreachable. For some reason the commercial marinas....especially Rock Creek Marina, seem unaffected by the depth changes and you can almost always launch there! Rock Creek Marina has two of those little log homes for overnight rentals and several nice " rustic hotel type" rooms located on the boat docks. It is a fun place to stay, there is a bar, restaurant and ship's store right there and good fishing for a nominal fee right off the dock!

But book early in the summer, that place rocks!( I think that is why it is named Rock Creek) Fall is a wonderful, quieter time..we spent my birthday last year, in one of the little log homes.. log furniture ( bed, tables chairs) and a little porch with a huge view of the Lake makes it a very nice place for a special, quiet weekend!!! There is even an outside firepit, you can have "some mores"

Doc and I belong to the Perry Yacht Club, a sail only marina. Lots of fun over there and camping too but only for members. The membership is dedicated to maintaining their area of the Lake and ensuring the club remains vital and in compliance with Corp regulations. If you love to sail... take a look at the website! Right now pics are posted of their recent Toga Party!!!!

Goodbye, my wonderful Compaq Presario "RIP"

If you have ever suffered the loss of a computer, you will feel my pain!

Sunday, my computer died. It was a sad day. It had been sick for a long time and it just couldn't go on. "Pres" ( my Compaq laptop) had been my faithful friend for SEVEN years!!! I know! Hard to believe. About three years ago ,the battery ceased to hold a charge. I went into one of the office stores, hoping to replace the battery...they just laughed at me!!!

Well, I just went back home, plugged it into an electric outlet and kept going. About a year later, I was having trouble with the power cord. I didn't bother to ask at the office store, my pride couldn't take it. I talked privately to my computer whiz son and he fixed me right up with a little pigtail connection that overcame the issues we were having.

In fact me and Pres, kept going for another two years. But Sunday, the writing was on the wall. Or should I say, the typing was on the screen....Pres wasn't going to come out of it...he was just too far gone. So my wonderful Compaq Presario, who never even had a service call in seven years, has moved on to Electronic Heaven...... I miss him already!!!!

I spent all day today, buying a new one, removing my data from Pres and trying to figure this HP thing out. I am not going to allow myself to get close to this one....no, one heartbreak over a laptop is enough for my life time!!!

I will say the painless thing was the purchase......you can buy almost everything online ...."docs island time travel" has a great shopping connection...totally free to you, but you must be invited..so I am inviting you!!! www.getpaidcashback.com you will see a short video and have the opportunity to sign up....cash back, occasional free shipping, there are 600 stores and this web site links you directly to the store site, it is just a great resource for saving money and getting the best price.

Well technology marches on!!! I am trying my best to keep up!!!

New England Lobsters....big, red and delicious!

Last night the "kids" came over for dinner and Doc surprised us with a "Shore Dinner"!!!! Also known as a " New England Dinner", he had purchased 4 huge Maine lobsters and boiled them up right there in our tiny kitchen. In addition, as custom dictates..he served corn on the cob, boiled potatoes and melted butter with lemon, for dipping. A big loaf of fresh bread ensured that we got plenty to eat!!!!
One of the "kids" was Ashley, our 25 year old daughter. Ashley loves eating lobster, but can't bear the thought of how they were boiled to death. ( go figure!!! after dinner we were out on the dock fishing, she didn't mind hooking the biggest Bass of all of us) So to spare Ashley, "Daddy Doc" kept it a secret as to what we were having for dinner, until he plopped that big cooked lobster down on our plates!!! All I can say, our pre-dinner conversation must have been very interesting, as we never even noticed the smell or that great big kettle on the stove!!!!!
We were thrilled and surprised when we saw the dinner offering!!!!!!!

We started to recall our trips to the East Coast. Both of the other "kids" went to college back East, one in Cape Cod and one in Groton/ New London. So for eight years, we went to Parent's Weekend and visited any other chance we could, just to eat New England seafood.

I would highly recommend a trip to Mystic, Connecticut for everyone....I think early fall is the best time to travel there, especially October. The leaves are changing, the weather is beautiful and the lobster restaurants are still open, but less crowded......the summer crowd has gone away!

Mystic is a special historic town. Founded in 1654, it rose quickly to prominence as a ship building center during the clipper ship era. "Mystic Seaport" is restored village which has a exhibits, ships, a wonderful nautical bookshop and gift shop.

Mystic is also home to the "Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration" It is one of the leading aquariums in the United States. Next to the Aquarium is a collection of restaurants, a neat little outdoor mall and a McDonald's that serves lobster rolls!! (the cold sandwich, made with a lobster salad/ mayo)

A short scenic drive to Groton will reward you in many ways......"Abbott's Lobster in the Rough" has the best hot lobster sandwich you will ever eat! Dripping in butter on a soft roll, big chunks of beautiful white lobster meat! Yum!!! You can eat indoors or outdoors, great harbor view...there was a question on chowhound.org ..."is this place worth a trip?"Absolutely!!! I still dream about that place!!!!!

And don't forget "Mystic Pizza"!!! Remember the movie with Julia Robert's? Go rent it! It will get you in the mood for Mystic! It is still there, in the neat, little, old part of town (near the draw bridge) and serves very good pizza to tourists and locals alike! You can purchase T shirts and souvenirs..remember the slogan..." A little piece of heaven"

The easiest way to get to the Mystic area is to fly into Providence, RI and rent a car..you can drive easily to Mystic, Groton or the Cape in an hour or so.....might need to allow for heavy traffic on the Cape, summer and fall .

Another option is fly into Boston, you will encounter more traffic and driving, but then you can also explore Boston, while there! Newport, Rhode Island, another historic town, is also an easy drive from Providence. The summer playground of the early rich and home to The New York Yacht Club ( no, they do not have reciprocity with any other Yacht Club! We asked!!!!)

You wanna go, don't you!!!??? (Me too, again over and over , in fact I want to MOVE there!!!!) You can purchase tickets, hotels and cars...online on my online travel site http://www.docsislandtimetravel.com/. We often have special fares to that area, click on " Looking for a Great Deal". Enter your city and destination..these are last minute type trips, perfect for that surprise, special weekend! Right now you can get airfare from KC to Providence with hotel for three nights for $314.00 taxes and fees included! WOW!!!! Course these fares go quickly, so you have to book when you see them!!

Women in the Outdoors aka WITO

Yesterday I was at my favorite store, Bass Pro of Independence, picking up the registration forms for our WITO event coming up in August.....more about that soon!!
But first, info about WITO. Women in the Outdoors is an outreach program of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), which is a huge non-profit organization. The mission statement of the NWTF is " working for the conservation of the wild turkey and preservation of our hunting traditions"
Quotes from the power point presentation of NWTF/WITO
"An integral part of keeping the hunting heritage alive is the women who make up the members of NWTF /Women in the Outdoors Program"
WITO was started in 1998 by the NWTF to introduce women to the outdoors and our nation's hunting and conservation traditions. The program has grown by leaps and bounds to what it is today. In 1998 there were 8 events being offered...in 2008, there were over 200 events offered all over the United States. "
Which leads me to our event, which is being generously sponsored by the Bass Pro Shop of Independence......the manager, Brian and the special events planner, April, are just super people to work with!! Supportive and energetic, they are all about getting women involved in the great outdoors!!!! Bass Pro opens it doors and provides meeting rooms, some of our teachers and lots of resources to support this great non-profit NWTF/WITO

" New" ( 1962) Cookbook!

"Why nearly 9,000,000 women cherish this cookbook" ( title on the opening page!)

As you know, I love Vintage and especially Vintage at a great price. Yesterday, shopping an estate sale, at the beautiful Lake Winnebago ( note...my trailer is a 1959 Winnebago...seems I am drawn to the name, "Winnie") I found a Better Homes and Gardens new Cookbook. Remember that one? It has the red checked cover an the binding is the notebook type.. the one that has been recently re-released..but this one was the 1953,1962 (Third Printing) and it looked pretty old!!!!

The cookbook was only $3.00 and it is in excellent condition! But best thing about it, the hand written comments in the margins! Comments like......

" Good" written next to Gingersnaps

" Peanut Butter may be added" in blue ink, beside the Chocolate Crinkle recipe

" Very good" nearly illegible, by the Creme-filled Cookies

and then, the best of all, a tiny written recipe, an addition of icing ( yum) to the Toffee Bars which was also listed as "very good"

Funny, all the comments were in the cookie section! I guess the previous owner had a sweet tooth or a lot of cookie-lovin' grandkids!! I could survive happily on cookies.
I am trying those Toffee Bars today...postpone the diet one more day!!!!! Let me know if you want the recipe!

Trip Planning

Wow!
Most of the fun in travel is the planning and anticipation of the trip. Right??? LOL I have spent an enormous amount of time on the phone yesterday and today, planning a trip to the "Bridges of Madison County" covered bridge festival in Oct. Remember that sad, a-moral story of a lonely housewife that "falls in love" with a traveling National Geographic photographer?( this is where the movie is filmed)
Yes, she fell in love in three days with a complete stranger, while her hard working husband and her children were away at the (gasp) state fair for a 4-H project.( Am I the only one that thinks this is a lot to expect the viewer to buy into?) What if instead of a photographer, his profession was ax-murderer? The whole story line could have changed...from being a love story to a slasher movie!!!!

Okay..back to my original thought!! I spent a lot of time tracking down reservations because this particular place did not accept online reservations!!! Hard to believe, isn't it? They still have a very nice man, answering the phone, returning calls, collecting credit card numbers.

Our business.......docsislandtimetravel.com allows you to explore all kinds of possibilities of trips ONLINE and purchase ONLINE.....no, we are not the only online travel site, but we believe we offer the best!!!!! Everything you can imagine...go in and plan your dream trip! If you need help....give me a call 816 305-5872 or janfilberth@yahoo.com for questions!!!!

PS: It is a pretty good movie, if you can get beyond the moral dilemma....have a box of tissues handy to mop up the tears!
