New England Lobsters....big, red and delicious!

Last night the "kids" came over for dinner and Doc surprised us with a "Shore Dinner"!!!! Also known as a " New England Dinner", he had purchased 4 huge Maine lobsters and boiled them up right there in our tiny kitchen. In addition, as custom dictates..he served corn on the cob, boiled potatoes and melted butter with lemon, for dipping. A big loaf of fresh bread ensured that we got plenty to eat!!!!
One of the "kids" was Ashley, our 25 year old daughter. Ashley loves eating lobster, but can't bear the thought of how they were boiled to death. ( go figure!!! after dinner we were out on the dock fishing, she didn't mind hooking the biggest Bass of all of us) So to spare Ashley, "Daddy Doc" kept it a secret as to what we were having for dinner, until he plopped that big cooked lobster down on our plates!!! All I can say, our pre-dinner conversation must have been very interesting, as we never even noticed the smell or that great big kettle on the stove!!!!!
We were thrilled and surprised when we saw the dinner offering!!!!!!!

We started to recall our trips to the East Coast. Both of the other "kids" went to college back East, one in Cape Cod and one in Groton/ New London. So for eight years, we went to Parent's Weekend and visited any other chance we could, just to eat New England seafood.

I would highly recommend a trip to Mystic, Connecticut for everyone....I think early fall is the best time to travel there, especially October. The leaves are changing, the weather is beautiful and the lobster restaurants are still open, but less crowded......the summer crowd has gone away!

Mystic is a special historic town. Founded in 1654, it rose quickly to prominence as a ship building center during the clipper ship era. "Mystic Seaport" is restored village which has a exhibits, ships, a wonderful nautical bookshop and gift shop.

Mystic is also home to the "Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration" It is one of the leading aquariums in the United States. Next to the Aquarium is a collection of restaurants, a neat little outdoor mall and a McDonald's that serves lobster rolls!! (the cold sandwich, made with a lobster salad/ mayo)

A short scenic drive to Groton will reward you in many ways......"Abbott's Lobster in the Rough" has the best hot lobster sandwich you will ever eat! Dripping in butter on a soft roll, big chunks of beautiful white lobster meat! Yum!!! You can eat indoors or outdoors, great harbor view...there was a question on chowhound.org ..."is this place worth a trip?"Absolutely!!! I still dream about that place!!!!!

And don't forget "Mystic Pizza"!!! Remember the movie with Julia Robert's? Go rent it! It will get you in the mood for Mystic! It is still there, in the neat, little, old part of town (near the draw bridge) and serves very good pizza to tourists and locals alike! You can purchase T shirts and souvenirs..remember the slogan..." A little piece of heaven"

The easiest way to get to the Mystic area is to fly into Providence, RI and rent a car..you can drive easily to Mystic, Groton or the Cape in an hour or so.....might need to allow for heavy traffic on the Cape, summer and fall .

Another option is fly into Boston, you will encounter more traffic and driving, but then you can also explore Boston, while there! Newport, Rhode Island, another historic town, is also an easy drive from Providence. The summer playground of the early rich and home to The New York Yacht Club ( no, they do not have reciprocity with any other Yacht Club! We asked!!!!)

You wanna go, don't you!!!??? (Me too, again over and over , in fact I want to MOVE there!!!!) You can purchase tickets, hotels and cars...online on my online travel site http://www.docsislandtimetravel.com/. We often have special fares to that area, click on " Looking for a Great Deal".
