Perry Lake...a great fishing, camping, equestrian atv-ing, boating and hiking destination! I am going there today......heading over with my trailer, trying to beat the 4th of July crowd and hoping to get a campsite right on the Lake. (Although, I hear it is full )
Perry State Park...only 20 minutes from Topeka or Lawrence.....easy to get to from Kansas City.......I 70 to the East Lawrence exit..take a right and keep driving. It only takes about an hour!
12,500 acres of Lake!!!( now that is a big lake!) 11,000 acres of wildlife area nearby. Perry State Park is 1,250 acres on the shore in Perry Lake in Jefferson County, Kansas. There are several campgrounds scattered around the lake....most of them have lake front campsites and basic services like showers, toilets, electric and water...there are also numerous primitive tent campsites. A swimming beach and a beach house adds to the summer fun factor! Numerous ramps to launch boats, but check water depth! Lake Perry is used by the Corp of Engineers for flood control, so in high rain situations the boat ramps and courtesy docks in the Park may be unreachable. For some reason the commercial marinas....especially Rock Creek Marina,seem unaffected by the depth changes and you can almost always launch there! Rock Creek Marina has two of those little log homes for overnight rentals and several nice " rustic hotel type" rooms located on the boat docks. It is a fun place to stay, there is a bar, restaurant and ship's store right there and good fishing for a nominal fee right off the dock!
But book early in the summer, that place rocks!( I think that is why it is named Rock Creek) Fall is a wonderful, quieter time..we spent my birthday last year, in one of the little log homes.. log furniture ( bed, tables chairs) and a little porch with a huge view of the Lake makes it a very nice place for a special, quiet weekend!!! There is even an outside firepit, you can have "some mores"
Doc and I belong to the Perry Yacht Club, a sail only marina. Lots of fun over there and camping too but only for members. The membership is dedicated to maintaining their area of the Lake and ensuring the club remains vital and in compliance with Corp regulations. If you love to sail... take a look at the website!
